Ayurvedic Massage (Abhyanga): Healing with Herbs and Oils

The Ancient Art of Abhyanga

Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic massage that involves the application of warm herbal oils onto the body. It is one of the oldest and most beloved healing practices in Indian medicine. The Sanskrit word "Abhyanga" means "to anoint," and this practice is designed to nourish and rejuvenate the entire being.

Why Oils Matter

In Ayurveda, oils are not just for lubrication. They are carriers of herbal properties that penetrate deep into the skin, nourishing tissues, calming the nervous system, and promoting overall balance. The choice of oil is tailored to each person's Dosha (body type):

  • Vata Dosha: Warm sesame oil for grounding and calming.
  • Pitta Dosha: Coconut or sunflower oil for cooling and soothing.
  • Kapha Dosha: Mustard or safflower oil for stimulation and warmth.

The Abhyanga Process

  1. Preparation: The person lies comfortably on a warm wooden table.
  2. Warming the Oil: The herbal oil is gently warmed to body temperature.
  3. Application: The oil is applied generously in long, rhythmic strokes following the energy lines of the body.
  4. Massage: The therapist uses various strokes—long gliding strokes, kneading, and circular motions—to work through the muscles and tissues.
  5. Rest: After the massage, the person is allowed to rest for 15-20 minutes to absorb the benefits.
  6. Bath: A warm shower or bath follows to cleanse the body.

Abhyanga for Self-Care

You can also practice a simplified version of Abhyanga at home. Warm a small amount of oil, apply it to your body, and massage gently in circular motions. Let the oil absorb for 15 minutes before taking a warm shower. This simple daily ritual can have profound effects on your wellbeing.
